I researched for days prior to ordering this Kayak and I am so thankful I took the plunge and purchased it. My goal in writing this review is not just to tell you what I experienced with my new kayak but to encourage anyone that is struggling with their size not to let it keep you from getting out there. I am 5 8′ 320 pounds give or take and I am trying my best to get out and be active. I loathe the gym and I am trying to find things that I can do. I have always been athletic but due to injuries from working out being the size I am has made adventures quite challenging and sometimes painful. But here’s the skinny on my maiden voyage. My kayak arrived 2 days after order and I had a planned to head to the lake with a friend to try it out immediately. I inflated it in my home because I did not want any surprises happening on the lake. I ordered new paddles before my kayak arrived because of so many other reviewers reporting how crappy the ones are that come with the kayak and I must agree on that point. It was easy and quick to inflate but I have yet to figure out the back pack which also is the back support, The kayak fully inflated is very light and easy to transfer from the car to the lake area. There was a boat launch where we were which was nice. I decided to straddle the kayak to sit down into it as recommended by another reviewer, it wasn’t pretty but it worked. I realize that the boat is made to hold up to 400 pounds but it did sag in the middle some and my bottom was wet the entire time but I didn’t care because I was finally able to kayak!! It takes a while to balance and paddle at the same time as it does not track as well as a hard shell kayak but I got into a great rhythm and figured out how far to place the paddles in the water to maintain my stride and balance. The friend I was with had a hard shell kayak and I kept up with her perfectly. The back support is not much of a support but to me it was comfortable because I liked sitting back while I paddled. The top and back came up slightly out of the water and there was a small crease where I sat on the kayak but to be honest I didn’t really care what I looked like I just wanted to be out on the water. The material was very durable and we were out when it was in the 90’s. My dog laid comfortably on my leg as I paddled and her nails were no problem at all.

My first voyage was over 2 hours and I loved every minute of it and I can’t wait to get back out there. So all in all I am giving this kayak 5 stars. It’s an inexpensive alternative and it worked well for me.B

4.Best Under 500:Intex Challenger K1 Kayak

Intex Challenger K1 Kayak, 1-Person Inflatable Kayak Set with Aluminum Oars and High Output Air PumpBUY FROM AMAZON

Wow!!!! The best $60 I have EVER spent. I received a ton of compliments as well while out on the lake. Reasons why I love this kayak:
1) I’m a woman- I’m strong but I can’t carry a hard plastic kayak. This kayak is ultra light!!
2) Its super fast to inflate and deflate
3) It fits in the back of my Lexus NX 200t
4) My dog can kayak with me, he naps and watches the birds go by. I’m never worried that his nails may puncture the kayak.
5) Its safe and sturdy
6) It’s FUN!!!!!!GO TO TOP

  • Nimble, durable kayak is made of durable welded material with eye-catching graphics for added safety on the lake or slow-moving river
  • Cockpit is designed for comfort and maximized space, and inflatable I-beam floors add stability
  • Cargo net to store extra gear, and grab line on both ends of kayak; inflatable seat with backrest
  • Comes with 84-inch aluminum oar, repair patch and Hi-output manual hand pump
  • Measures 30-by-15-by-108 inches (W x H x D), with 27.2-pound weight and 220-pound maximum capacity

Pros:
1. The fun per dollar ratio is extremely high. You’ll pay for this after only a few hours of skipping the kayak rental fee.
2. Everything you need to get on the water, except for a PFD, is included.
3. Comes with a decent carrying bag and you can easily fit two or three of these kayaks in the trunk of a compact car.
4. Durable – we’ve taken the out on the American River a number of times without any hiccups

Cons
1. The paddle is usable but a bit flimsy. You don’t have to replace it but I did.
2. From the other reviews I’ve heard of folks having problem with the Skeg coming off. I avoided this problem by installing a lanyard on the skeg right off the bat. I can’t comment on whether this is a real problem or not, but I’ve never had one come off.
3. This is not a fast, smooth paddling kayak. Expect to work harder than folks in rental and to have a lot of left-right movement when trying to go straight.
4. I found that if I put on aerosol sunscreen it will take the paint right off the kayak. Stick with regular sunscreen unless you want to disembark wearing a new coat of gray paint.
5. It’s a bit of a pain to get it completely dried out, which you need to do if you’re going to pack it away in a closet.B

A handy large kayak that holds two to three adults and up to 855 pounds, the 420x lets you rocket fearlessly down Class IV rapids, traverse miles of wilderness rivers to remote camping spots, or fly fish on trout streams that other fishermen can’t access. Very versatile. the main bow hatch is wide enough to store and easily access all the gear. Paddle holders work well and built in rod holders are fantastic, especially when used for trolling. Takes abuse well and stands up to rocks and scratches. Seat is very comfortable and the sruppers drain the water well, when combines with scrupper plugs a four season fishing machine. Good value for the money. Built in foot rests are better than most of the adjustable ones I used in the past. Did not use the rudder option but the pre-drilled holes look dependable. Carrying handles are very comfortable and the only minus would be the center key/phone hatch, it leaks and does not seem to hold seal as such accumulates water.B

11.Lifetime 10 Foot, Two Person Tandem Fishing Kayak $661.53

BUY FROM AMAZON

After buying and using this boat for a nice long three mile river paddle/fishing trip I can recommend it to anyone looking for a lower priced but high quality and stable fishing kayak. I also highly recommend it to larger people that want to go have fun and not swamp their boat. I’m approx 6 foot and just under three hundred and found the seating area and leg room very nice when set up for one paddler (with the Crazy Creek Kayak III seat and a 240cm paddle). I had the entire rear deck and hull area to store stuff and the front bungees were in perfect range for my dry bag and life jacket.

Being a wide and relatively short kayak you will not be breaking speed records and you may have an issue with tracking at times (side currents or high winds). That said, this is a FISHING/PLEASURE style kayak. Not a long distance fast cruising machine. If you want a sleek fast cruiser, look at a sit in kayak or a touring sit on top kayak and pay the $1000 for it. If you want to fish within a few miles of the launch point or want to go paddle with friends for fun without tossing a grand at it, buy this one.GO TO TOP

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST FISHING KAYAKS

Some Question Before Buying The Best Kayak

  • What’s the best type of fishing kayak?
  • What accessories do I need on my kayak?
  • How to select the best paddle for kayak fishing?
  • What kind of anchor do I need for my kayak?
  • The biggest MISTAKES anglers make when buying a kayak.

Choosing a Fishing Kayak

Kayak Fishing is one of the hottest trends in outdoor sports. Whether you’re a shore-bound fisherman getting into a kayak to reach new waters, a recreational kayaker looking to bring your passion for fishing aboard your plastic vessel, or a boat fisherman who recognizes fishing kayaks as an exciting way to get out on the water

There are many kayaks built specifically for fishermen, and most of these craft are remarkably stable and comfortable. They are available with features like rod holders, tackle hatches, anchor systems, and even livewells.

There is no one-size-fits all when it comes to fishing kayaks, but with all the different models being manufactured today, there’s a better chance than ever that you can find one to fit your fishing needs.

Which Fishing Kayak is Right for You?

The bottom line in choosing the best fishing kayak for your needs is that there is no one-size-fits all. Before you make a decision on purchasing a kayak for fishing, the most important thing you can do is to take stock of where and how you plan to do most of your paddling and fishing. Identify your needs: Will you be fishing in freshwater ponds for largemouth bass? Navigating streams and rivers to catch smallmouth bass and trout? Poking around saltwater harbors, estuaries and flats for striped bass and bluefish? Or do you plan to venture out into the open ocean and launch through surf? Also, will this kayak be strictly a fishing vessel, or do you plan to use it for relaxation and recreation with your family?

Once you’ve thought about what you want from a fishing kayak, it’s time to select a handful that appear to match your desired criteria. At that point, try them all! Always demo a kayak before you buy it!

Before you can evaluate the fishing kayaks at your local paddlesport shop or marina, it’s helpful to understand some of the important characteristics of kayaks. Most fishing kayaks can be used for a variety of activities, but understand that no one kayak excels at every activity. Choosing a kayak, like choosing a boat or a car, means mulling over a long list of specifications and deciding what features are “must-haves” and which ones are compromises. Once you understand your options, you can start down the path of choosing the right kayak for your intended purposes. These are some of the basics to consider before you buy your first, or next, fishing kayak.

Types of Fishing Kayaks

SIT IN OR SIT ON TOP?

Fishing kayaks come in different designs to hold the paddler, some of them are ‘open’ where you sit on top of the deck while other kayaks have a hole where the paddler sits in, often with a spray skirt to keep out the water. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Sit on top kayaks offer much greater maneuverability which is important when reeling in fish. However, they can let in a lot of water, while the sit-in varieties keep a lot of water out of the kayak.

Sit on top kayaks offer much easier access to gear and tend to be more stable. But they can expose your gear to the elements, unlike the sit-in. Sit-in kayaks are typically better for more seasoned paddlers who prefer the control, as well as providing more dry storage options.

These are some of the basics to consider before you buy your first, or next, fishing kayak.

PEDALS

Pedals or paddles? We’re seeing more peddle-driven models these days as they can be less tiring than paddling. However peddle models will be more expensive. Paddling offers the best control – but having peddles and a paddle gives you flexibility in all surroundings.

SEAT

Some seats can turn even the most successful day fishing to a day you can’t wait to end, thanks to a sore back and achy behind from an uncomfortable seat. The seat is one of the most important parts of a fishing kayak when it comes to comfort. You need your back to be appropriately supported, especially if you are paddling long distances, so opt for something that is comfortable or you’ll dread heading back out on the water.

STORAGE

Kayak fishing requires plenty of storage options on the kayak to store and keep all your gear and equipment. There is a limit on how much you can take on the water but having decent storage for your most important items is an important factor to consider. You’ll need to make sure you have a dry-hatch somewhere on the kayak so you can store those items you can’t allow to get wet or need protection from the elements.

WEIGHT AND LENGTH

The weight and length of a fishing kayak can play a big role in stability and ease of paddling. Typically, a long, narrow kayak will be fast while a shorter, wide kayak will be slower, but offers more stability. Beginner kayak fishers should opt for something that is smaller and more stable as they get to learn the art. You’ll also want to consider the weight of your kayak – the heavier it is, the harder it will be to lug around to your fishing destination. If it is a heavy kayak, you may need to consider some kind of trolley that can wheel your kayak to and from the car.

FISHING LOCATION

Where do you plan to kayak? In the ocean or out on the lakes? In calm waters or in the surf? These will all play a role in the type of fishing kayak you will purchase. Rough conditions on the sea will need something stable but that can also cut through surf and obstacles. Maneuverability is key. Smaller, sit on top kayaks are a better option for still water such as lakes.

CAPACITY & PERSONS

Do you plan on fishing by yourself or taking a buddy, or maybe a family member? You will need to consider if you are happy with a kayak with capacity for just one person, or two.
